FlipKart.com launch native android app
In a bid to tap increasing m-commerce space, FlipKart.com has launched its native android app in the market. The company states in a statement that the app comes with multiple features including voice search and barcode scanning to compare product prices. The app also offers offline viewing of products that user has already checked and sharing product information via call, SMS, emails, social media without exiting the app. The app also has a widget that showcases/highlights the sites’ top offers on the home screen.
Speaking to India Digital Review, Saranagati Chatterjee, VP - Products, Flipkartsays that mobile is driving double digit user traffic on FlipKart, “Mobile accounts for double digits when it comes to visits to Flipkart.com. In the last two to three years, mobile has been growing at 2X the rate of desktops. Android and iOS combined account for more than 80% of mobile visits and orders.”
This is FlipKart’s first comprehensive mobile app earlier the company has launched apps which includes the android, web reader, iOS and Windows8 apps for its eBook.
Saranagati tells us that the earlier app was merely a wrap on mobile and not a native app. Hence, its performance will not be indicative of how the company expects this current app to perform. Presently, FlipKart is aiming to concentrate on perfecting the experience on the android app. It will roll out the app on iOS platform in the next 2-3 months.
Spelling out company’s mobile only targets, Saranagati says, “Mobile as a percentage of internet traffic in India is steadily growing. The m-tailing opportunity is estimated to hit between Rs. 1500 – 2000 crores by 2015 and we are bullish on making the most of this opportunity. Contribution of mobile channel to overall Flipkart revenue and order is steadily climbing.”
