Sainsbury’s has announced it will be looking to source more food and drink from Scotland in the coming years, as it looks to double the amount of British food sold at its stores by 2020.
During the supermarket’s annual Regional Supplier Conference in Edinburgh on Wednesday, Sainsbury’s confirmed that it would work with Scottish suppliers as part of its ’20 by 20’ Sustainability Plan.
Sainsbury's Group Commercial Director Mike Coupe, said: "We're proud to work with these fantastic Scottish suppliers to meet customer demand for unique local variations to reflect tastes and traditions.”
The retailer already sources £600 million worth of local products through 140 Scottish suppliers, but is looking to increase that number in the coming years as it works more closely with local businesses.
Rich Squire from Sainsbury's regional buying team said: "We've been building our local sourcing network for a number of ears and have created a strong base in Scotland. 140 Scottish suppliers are currently working with us to source £600 million worth of local products. We look forward to expanding our Scottish range and establishing further partnerships."
