The New Square shopping centre in West Bromwich

The New Square shopping centre in West Bromwich was visited by a staggering 100,000 consumers during its opening weekend.

The £140 million retail and leisure centre welcomed 21,000 visitors on its opening day on Thursday 11 July, with that number rising to 100,000 after Sunday 14 July.

The mixed-use project will feature shops and restaurants such as Next, Outfit, JD Sports, Costa, Prezzo and Harvester, and will be anchored by a Tesco Extra and a co-achor Primark store, which will be open later in the year.

Corporate affairs manager for Tesco, Matthew Magee, said: “The opening of New Square has been hotly anticipated and the launch day exceeded all our expectations, with the hot weather no doubt encouraging more people to visit the centre”.

Councillor Ian Jones, Sandwell’s cabinet minister for jobs and economy, added: “We’re thrilled to hear about the successful opening weekend of New Square. We were always confident that the development would prove to be a big hit with both Sandwell residents and people from further afield”.
