Through its 63-year-old history, America's largest donut and coffee chain Dunkin' Donuts has allowed a different name for its stores only once - for India. All its stores in the country are branded 'Dunkin Donuts & More', because Indian consumers prefer to order coffee along with food.
The American firm, which completes one year in India this month, in which period they opened 10 stores, has made a number of exceptions only for the Indian market including offering home delivery and launching donuts in gulab jamun and laddoo formats in the festive season. But Donuts are unfamiliar to the Indian palate and options for Coffee are plentiful. The market has therefore been slow to respond. The market meltdown has not helped either. Domino's same-store sales growth during January-March, for example, slipped to 7.7% from 16.2% a year earlier. The slow start notwithstanding, Jubilant has expressed its commitment to grow the chain in the country.
