Mobile Gaming Startup Mech Mocha Raises Funding From Flipkart And Blume Ventures
Mobile gaming firm Mech Mocha has raised an undisclosed amount of seed funding from e-commerce major Flipkart and seed-stage investor Blume Ventures. Flipkart has been active in the mobile gaming space after having backed offline gaming startup MadRat Games last year in November.
The Bangalore-based firm plans to use fresh funds to scale up team and build multiple games for the Indian market as well as develop a back-end platform which would include social and payments solutions for their games. Mech Mocha's first game was called 'Puppet Punch', which the company claimed clocked 100,000 downloads in its first four days of launch earlier this year. It recently acquired exclusive rights of the upcoming movie, 'Chhota Bheem - Himalayan Adventure', based on the popular cartoon character in India to create games around it.
"We have over 400,000 installs and growth is accelerating as smartphone sales increase in India. We are working on more payments options to shore up revenues. Our major growth drivers would be the tier II & tier III cities. Therefore, we are focusing on mass Indian gaming segments with precise focus on popular culture, local text gratifications in Hinglish and many other India-inspired assets," said Arpita Kapoor, co-founder and CEO at Mech Mocha.
The online gaming industry in India is expected to be $3 billion by 2018 from its present size of less than $1 billion.
In March this year, Moonfrog Labs had raised $15 million from marquee investors such as Sequoia Capital and Tiger Global. Prior to that, in June 2014, Sequoia Capital had also invested a similar amount in Octro Inc, which launched digital versions of the card games Rummy and Teen Patti. Octro was among the first Indian gaming startup to receive such a big cheque from investors then. It has over 32 million users.
Nishant Verman, head of corporate development at Flipkart, said, "The team at Mech Mocha is one of the best I've seen in this domain. In Mech Mocha, we saw a perfect mix of young founders with infectious energy who are close to the market coupled with a core team with collective experience of working on world-class mobile products from King, Disney, Nickelodeon, Zynga, EA and Directi. Mech Mocha will benefit from Flipkart's expertise in scalable mobile platform development. Both e-commerce and gaming have overlapping audience and thus we see multiple synergies that can benefit mutually."
Mech Mocha, at present, is witnessing transactions worth $1,000 every day on its platform, the company said.
"Mech Mocha is investing actively in building India's first ethnographic intelligence framework to be able to quickly localize their games for different regions of India. This framework, combined with their unique alternate channels of acquiring users, can then be used to build games for mass-market in India," said Arpit Agarwal, principal, Blume Ventures.
