Times Internet-owned CouponDunia has launched an in-store, hyperlocal couponing system where users will be able to buy items in offline stores using CouponDunia’s coupons in categories like apparel, footwear, accessories, home decor, electronics and gaming among others. Its initial partners include chains like Shoppers Stop, Calvin Klein, Marks & Spencers and Skechers. There is a possibility that it will consider adding price comparison and product discovery in the future, Sameer Parwani, founder and CEO of CouponDunia told TheTradeBoss.

GPS sensitive app notifications for coupons

CouponDunia claims to drive a 1,000 crore GMV yearly, with tie ups with around 2,000 online retailers, 5,000 restaurants and other merchants. With this new launch, it will be able to target users in malls and local shopping shops where CouponDunia’s app, which will take into account the user’s location through GPS, will inform the user about the offers available around them. This will be rolled out next week. The app also has a feature where if you’re in an e-commerce app and shake your phone, it will send a notification with coupons for that store.

Parwani told TheTradeBoss that the app will auto detect that the user has walked into a mall and trigger offers running in that mall. This will include the partners that it has tied up with for offline coupons as well as retailers whose coupons are already available on the platform. Parwani said that the local offers available on the app platform will also be available on the web, but the local offers will be for on the spot use and cannot be saved for later, once the user moves away from the location.

Online with offline, not online vs offline

When asked what advantage offline couponing would have over online, Parwani mentioned that the offline couponing section doesn’t necessarily compete with the online one, but complements it in a way that CouponDunia is generating these offers for its merchants. They wouldn’t necessarily be able to offer these online to local customers.

Grocery coupons in the offing

A company of 190 people, CouponDunia is looking to expand its team by the end of this year and employs around 20 people for retail sections. It is also planning to launch grocery coupons in a month, which will be published as a centrespread on alternative weeks in the newspaper. This concept will be similar to grocery discount coupons available in the US, but would work across its partner retailers, some of which include Big Bazaar, Spencers and Star Bazaar.

Raftaar tie up for Hindi coupons

In March this year, the company tied up with Hindi news portal Raftaar.in to offer online coupons in Hindi. The coupons would be available on a separate webpage on Raftaar at coupons.raftaar.in and users would be able to choose categories like mobile, education, beauty, fashion, recharge, sports and travel. The coupon would direct them to the merchant website where to make purchases.

Started by Parwani in 2010, the couponing platform was acquired by Times Internet in May last year. At the time, Times Internet’s existing deals site TimesDeal was merged with CouponDunia, and had over 1 million subscribers and 2 million visits every month. Currently, the platform claims to have over 7 million subscribers, who, with its other users combined used over 1.5 million coupons in May this year. The parent company, CouponDunia Media also operates CupomWorld in Brazil, KuponDunya in Turkey, KodyBony in Poland and CouponDunia Indonesia.
