Topshop and Topman have opened their first flagship store in Auckland, New Zealand, under the Top Retail franchise founded by fashion designer Karen Walker, menswear retailer Barkers, and a third, silent partner.
The brand new 10,000 sq ft, two floor flagship on Queen Street opened its doors to customers last week, as hundreds of shoppers waited up to 12 hours to be the first people inside the store.
Although Walker’s Auckland boutique brand The Department Store, has been stocking items from Topshop and Topman for the past five years, the flagships are expected to bring a new phase for the high street favourites, with further sites in Wellington and Christchurch also up for discussion.
Commenting on the opening, Barkers chief executive Jamie Whiting said: “We believe New Zealand’s fashion retail market is in very good health, and we see Topshop’s arrival on our shores as a big signal of confidence. Creating the best and most dynamic in-store retail experience is a goal for us with Topshop and Topman, and we’re excited about what we will create in New Zealand.”
New Zealand has a rather unique retail environment- international businesses including Ikea, Amazon, H&M and Zara are yet to expand over to the country, so it’s likely Topshop will make a big impression with consumers.
