Flipkart appoints ex-Google executive Punit Soni to head product division

Flipkart has hired Punit Soni, a Google executive with expertise in mobile technology, to head product development, the latest in a string of top-level recruitments at India's largest online retailer.

Soni will report to Mukesh Bansal, chief executive officer of the commerce platform at Flipkart. Mukesh earlier this week hired a McKinsey director, Saikiran Krishnamurthy, as the chief operating officer of the commerce division.

"Punit is a proven product and technology leader with very significant contribution to Google mobile products and at Motorola," said Bansal, describing Soni as "a thought leader in cutting edge consumer product design."

Soni, who will join Flipkart in the first week of April, while at Google was responsible for managing and launching products such as mobile apps for the search giant and Moto G for Motorola Mobility. At Flipkart, he is expected to significantly enhance product design capability.

Flipkart is aggressively hiring senior employees to strengthen its technology, finance and leadership teams. The company has set aside an additional 2.5% of its capital for expanding its employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) as it scouts for top executives to join its newly reorganised senior leadership team, as reported by ET last month.

The company is expected to make 6-8 more strategic hires in the next one year.
