Amazon is launching its food and drinks delivery service in Park Slopes in Brooklyn on Friday, furthering widening their empire and carving out a niche in an affluent neighborhood. AmazonFresh currently offers either same or next day delivery on a variety of over 5,000 items, and is planning to continue its expansion into Brooklyn, a brand spokeswoman stating, “Currently, we are offering AmazonFresh in Brooklyn and will continue being thoughtful and methodical in our expansion”.
Grocery delivery is a particularly difficult sector for technology companies to branch into, and Amazon is up against strict competition from brands such as FreshDirect and Instacart. This Park Slopes expansion could really aid Amazon in establishing them in the business.
Bill Bishop, chief architect at Brick Meets Click, a consulting firm focused on retail technology commented on the wealth of the residents that inhabit the area "They are the sweetest of shoppers so anybody who attracts that business is taking the cream of the market".
Fresh bill begin as a free service for Brooklyn-members until the end of the year, when $299 per annum will be charged for the “Prime Fresh” programme. The service has already been tested in Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
