Coconut oil is a wonder product because of its high saturated fat content and its ability to oxidize slowly. It is resistant to rancidification and lasts up to two years without spoiling.
This oil is extracted from the kernel or meat of matured coconuts, making it edible. It has various uses in food, medicine and industry. Coconut oil’s main fat is lauric acid, which is a medium chain fatty acid that positively impacts cholesterol levels. It also contains vitamins E and K as well as iron and has both antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties.
Lately, coconut oil has managed to impress several beauty and health care experts. “It seems to be the answer for many problems such as dry skin, dull hair, digestive problems, or athlete’s foot,” said dermatologist Suzan Abdullah, “This oil is smooth and slick and it smells like a tropical island; it will help you to get back the best in you,” she added.
Coconut oil is great for your hands; it keeps it soft and hydrated. “Rub some coconut oil into the nail’s bed to treat dry, flaky cuticles. Massage each finger separately with the oil, concentrating especially on the rough areas,” said Abdullah. “Don’t forget your feet, they need special care too, especially in the winter season when they are covered. Before going to sleep, rub some coconut oil on your feet and wear socks,” she added.
Hair masks and treatments can be pricey. Moreover, most of them consist of toxic ingredients that might harm your hair, which is why many are lapping up the benefits of natural coconut oil.
“The fatty acids in this oil are able to soften your locks. It will hydrate and prevent the ends of your hair from drying out,” said Abdullah. “Try this once a week: Mix coconut oil with honey and apply on your hair and hold it up in a bun for at least 30 minutes, then rinse with warm water. If you have an oily scalp, rub some coconut oil onto the tips of your hair and leave it in. This promises you healthy, shiny and hydrated hair,” she added.
Another great use of the oil is that it can remove makeup, including waterproof makeup.
“Massage your face with a few drops of the oil; leave it for a few minutes and then then wipe it off with a cotton pad,” said the dermatologist. “You can also use it to clean your makeup brushes. Just mix antibacterial soap with coconut oil to keep your brushes clean and soft,” she added.
This miracle oil is good for your face too. Add it to your daily beauty regime and you will not regret it. “This oil is perfect for those with dehydrated and dry skin; it will moisturize your skin like no other product can,” said Abdullah. Apply a few drops on the tips of your finger and massage your face and neck in circular motion. Rinse it. You can add honey or baking soda to make a mask out of it,” she added.
Coconut oil is also beneficial for treating chapped lips. “Scrub your lips with a mixture of coconut oil and brown sugar or salt, then exfoliate your lips. Wash it off and add another layer of coconut oil to moisturize,” said Abdullah. “Make a bigger batch and use it as a body scrub for a weekly spa treatment at home,” she added.
You can also add a few drops of coconut oil to your bathtub for a relaxing time. “For using it as a massage oil, just warm it and see the difference.”
“Don’t forget to rub some on your underarms as this oil consists of lauric acid that kills bacteria and body odor,” she added.
Coconut oil is great for eye lashes too. “It will strengthen the lashes and make them longer,” said Abdullah.
“Apply on the lashes using a cotton swab and sleep with it. Wash your face with cold water in the morning and repeat the procedure every day. You will notice change in just two weeks,” she added.
